Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most beautiful experiences you'll have, and choosing how to document this special season in your life is something to think about. As a motherhood photographer, I'm often asked which is better: studio sessions or in-home sessions? And the truth is, what's best is different for every family. Both studio and in-home sessions are great options, and in this post, we'll discuss their differences, so that you can choose the setting that feels best for your family.

In-Home Sessions
In-home sessions are ideal for families who want their photos to feel more personal, and for those who feel their best in the comfort of their own home. In-home sessions allow families to slow down and to be fully present in the moment with their little one. If cuddling on the couch with your baby sounds like the perfect morning, an in-home session may be the best choice for you.
Benefits of In-Home Sessions:
- Your family may feel more comfortable. When you're in your own space, it may feel more comfortable to be in front of the camera, and if you have other small children, being at home can be help them feel more at ease.
- Your photos will have a more personal touch. Whether you want to show off the nursery you spent months getting ready for baby, or the living space you've made your own, having an in-home session will add that extra personal touch in your photos.
- Your pets can be included. If it's important to you for your fur babies to be included in your photos, doing your session at home may be the way to go. Although some studios allow pets, being at home allows them to feel their most comfortable.
- You won't have to travel anywhere. Being a new parent can be exhausting, so if packing up and driving to your session sounds like one more thing to check off the to-do list, having your session at home may help alleviate some stress, and allow you and your family to enjoy some quality time together.

Studio Sessions
Studio sessions are ideal for families who want their photos to have a neutral and minimalistic backdrop with dreamy lighting, and for those who don't want the extra hassle of having to tidy up their home before their session. If you'd like to spend some quality time with your little one in a beautifully decorated space, without having to do anything but show up, a studio session may be the best option for you.
Benefits of Studio Sessions:
- You don't have to clean or tidy up your home. One of the greatest things about having your newborn session in a studio, is that you don't have to worry about how your home looks. Being a parent is a huge time-commitment, and sometimes you don't have the energy to tidy up — and that's okay! That's what studio sessions are for.
- Your photos will have the most beautiful lighting. Studios are designed to have the dreamiest lighting. If you don't have much natural light in your home, and this is a concern for you, a studio session may be the way to go.
- You'll be able to relax in a peaceful environment. If you need a little break from the beautiful chaos of your home, a studio may be the perfect choice for you. You and your little one can enjoy some cuddles in a quiet and non-distracting space.

So... Which is Best?
The truth is, there’s no wrong choice. The best session is the one that feels most like you and your family.
If you want a clean, calm space where all you have to do is show up, a studio session may be perfect. If you want to capture your baby’s first days in the place that holds so many memories, an in-home session may be the best.
Whichever you choose, my goal remains the same: to document the moments that tell your story, authentically and intimately. Because these moments — no matter where they happen— are what matter most.
